Homestays & Cultural Immersion

Ever wondered what Christmas on the beach is like? Winter time for the is the perfect time to spend your Gap Year in Australia because it's their summer time. You can learn first hand about Australian culture on this trip. Our program sets you up to live with a warm and loving family during your stay in Adelaide. They have hosted travelers for over a decade. As a result they love to share their knowledge of the area as well as the indigenous history of the region. They live in an old seaside home in urban Henley Beach. You'll have your own room here and access to a bike to help you get around.

Adventuring in Adelaide & Beyond

The costal city is of Adelaide is located in the South of Australia. It's described by travelers as enchanting. Henley Beach is loved by visitors who love to swim, paddle, fish or hang in the sun on its wide and sandy beach. Henley Square is right on the beach and is a destination for locals because of its variety of restaurants, cafes and bars in a Mediterranean style setting. In addition, you'll have an opportunity to check out the Adelaide Fringe Festival which includes events like comedy, circus, music, visual arts,  and more. Nearby there are other fun outdoor places for hiking, biking, and exploration like Mount Lofty or the Kuitpo Forrest.

Apply for a Working Holiday Visa

One reason Australia is a popular destination for travelers on their Gap Year is the country offers a working holiday visa. While you would need to start planning three months in advance, this opportunity allows you to legally work. Employment in the summer time (our winter) is often found in hostels, bars, or on working farms. Due to the size and remote nature of Australia, travel here can be expensive. We are committed to supporting you create a magical trip that is within your budget.

During this gap year, I have grown into myself. I first joined the High Desert Center (HDC) feeling unsure about the future and nervous about my responsibilities in it. Throughout this year I have become grounded in my sense of self and excited to go out into the world. I attribute this to the spaciousness of the program.

Today! We are currently accepting applications.

When we ask our students why they chose us, many say words like “community,” “philosophy” or “strong recommendations.”  Another thing we commonly hear is that our programs are relatively affordable. Read more about how the HDC offers the most affordable gap year program out there.
